Valid questions, dear readers, since I've gone on at length about gaining back half the weight I lost during my three months on Meta (the holidays were a bitch last year), struggling with my addiction to sugar, and my general tendency to overeat on a regular basis. AKA falling off the diet wagon constantly.
Here's the deal.
When I started this program I had a magic number in my head and the funny thing is that as I inched closer to that number, the damned thing kept dropping, remaining always out of reach. Initially I thought I'd be happy at 116 pounds. I am 5 feet, 5 1/2 inches by the way. But when I hit 115 pounds, 112 seemed like a better goal. When I managed (through being totally neurotic about what I ate to the point of madness) to reach 112, I decided that 110 would be the ideal. You can see where I'm going with this, can't you? I couldn't keep it up. It wasn't the best weight for my body and I started to put the weight back on double time.
Why is it always so quick to come back and so slow to go? It's one of nature's little mysteries.
Anyhoo, as my weight continued to climb, I began to panic. I tried doing the Meta Nutrient Boost Week (baby food diet) again and it worked... while I was on it, but as soon as I resumed normal habits I gained it back. I just couldn't diet anymore.
In July I finally admitted that I had two problems. The first being that my goal weight was way too low, the second being that I had a sugar addiction. Since then, I've cut out sugar (apart from going to Starbucks for my skinny mocha about once a week - please don't judge me I'm a junkie) and have really kept an eye on calories.
So to answer your questions noble blog readers, Yes the Method works. I went from this...

Check it out and remember that I am 41 years old girls.

Of course we all look better either lying down (all the fat sinks to the back out of sight, gotta love gravity) or standing sideways totally sucking it in, so here is the real picture of how I look today.

| I should have cleaned the mirror. |
Plus, (and here's the real confession) I don't do the dance cardio with any regularity whatsoever! I don't like it, never have, but you know that. I run twice a week consistently and have done since April 2012, and I eat.
I eat pasta, I eat bread, I eat cheese. I like to eat and don't like to sweat, okay? There, I said it!
So there you have it. Me at 41, 5'5", 121 pounds. Yes, I'd love to lose another five pounds and keep it there, but what I know for sure is this. If I wasn't doing Tracy Anderson's Method 5 to 6 times a week for 30 to 50 minutes a day, I'd be in a lot worse shape.
I hope this doesn't discourage you.
Loads of love,
Shan
PS.
This is a recent photo taken after my return from the production of my feature film in Toronto. I've more or less reached my goal/maintenance weight! Hooray!

Shan, you look beautiful and should be so proud of your results. I know what a journey it has been. Your legs are killer too....way to go! Much love B
ReplyDeleteShan you look totally amazing, I can't even believe that first picture was your belly!! Well dome girl, see you CAN have it all... you got it!
ReplyDeleteP.s. I am totally printing your pictures out as inspiration &I motivation!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing! Nicole from Chicago here. I've been off the TAM for the last several months due to a very painful herniated disk that I suffered more than a year ago. Ironically, after getting worse and more painful even after seeing chiros and PTs, about three months ago, I discovered hot yoga and it's been the only thing that's helped. Of course, it's hard as hell, but doing it 3x/week has significantly reduced my pain. I was at a point where the doc was going to send me to a pain clinic to learn to deal with it. I KNEW there had to be a way to rehabilitate it through exercise, and Bikram yoga has a very specific spine-strengthening series of exercises.
ReplyDeleteBut, Bikram doesn't tone my muscles the way I'd like, so I'm trying to work on a way to get back into TAM without making my back worse. I've been able to do the arms the whole time, but the standing abs (though I love them) hurt me the next day. So I'm embarking on a very low-key modified (which means less) TAM (arms, modified abs, hips, legs and butt) a few times a week.
Ironically, I went back to the beginning of Meta just when you did (and I, too, remembered why I loved it!). Anyway, you look GREAT. I love how you are able to modify the program to fit your life; I think that's really the key.
Wows a! Congrats on 2 years! I hope I will one day have such a small waist!!!
ReplyDeleteTammy
Wow!! Shan, you look pretty perfect to me!!! How many women would kill for a figure like that?? Well done, girl!! As I always say - such an inspiration!!! Really proud of you, and your attitude to it all which is really healthy, I think. Keep it up, lovely! Xxx
ReplyDeleteYou look absolutely amazing! AMAZING I say! Don't forget how great your arms look too. This is a perfect poster for how Tracy tones and pulls in your entire body. You have found your perfect spot, balanced with working out, food and no sugar. You are such an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteYou look absolutely gorgeous, love! You look like you're in your 20's! Stunning!
ReplyDeleteThanks you guys, you're being way too generous. Big hugs.
ReplyDeleteShan -
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for over a year - have only posted a few times here and there (I'm shy). But I wanted to chime in to tell you 1) THANK YOU for being brave and showing us your progress and 2) you look AMAZING. Drop. dead. amazing.
You are a constant and beautiful inspiration to me - in a lot of ways!
-Josie
Josie, that's so sweet. Thank you.
DeleteShannon, I have been following your blog since July 2011. It was what initially got me to buy Meta (I'm hipcentric). I fell off the wagon a couple times in the last year due to a break up and death in my family after which I kind of lost the will to even worry about if I will even fit in my skinny jeans again. But I kept coming back here and it really kept me inspired. You are witty and your assessments are spot on. Anyway, you look SO amazing! Thank you for being brave enough to share it all. I want your legs!! You rock
ReplyDelete- Andrea
Andrea! This next year is going to be your year girl! I know it. xoxo
DeleteS.T.U.N.N.I.N.G. Your results are incredible and your commitment to the program always reminds me to get my ass on the mat. When I want to turn off Tracy and turn on Honey Boo Boo Child instead, I think, "Shan is rockin' out her workout, damnit. SO should I" ( :
ReplyDeleteYou are a force to reckoned with, Gorgeous!!!
Thanks Parker!!
DeleteDamn, girl! that's inspiring! I was just wondering, do you use the actual Tracy Anderson rebounder, or do you have another brand? I'm wondering if hers is good. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteCheers Jenny! I have a cheapo no-name from a sports store. Cost me $39. Have heard mixed reviews on Tracy's.
DeleteJust amazing ! Love you blog ! ;)
ReplyDeleteHot damn lady, you look amazeballs! I need to start doing TAM again - slacker party of one over here. You motivated me to get off my rear. Much love :)
ReplyDeleteHi Shan,
ReplyDeleteCan't believe your shoot is done already ! - am still here in progressively chilly Manchester - though only 4 more days of principle to go!
Have to say am ready to go home and get healthy again - have missed my workout soo much.
But you know what? On the bright side its made me appreciate how important these workouts are in my life now.
Not just on a physical level - which I have to say have def 'slid' since being here, but also for my head.
Its the feeling of, no matter what happens during the day, I have already managed to carve out 75 min for myself. So no matter how late I have to work, the day starts balanced.
No sure if this makes any sense?!
Anyway, back in the saddle for good as from this coming Monday! Its gonna be a shock to the system I'm sure!
Good to have you back
Sophie
Sophie, we had a very small budget and an incredibly ambitious schedule. The team was so tight and we pulled it off!
DeleteI can imagine how you must be feeling, ready to get back. Hang in there and enjoy those last days, girl. You've come through it with flying colors, you made it, we both did!!
I know what you mean about the workouts. They are invaluable to us in our daily lives.
You rock, girl! I just stumbled across you trying to find motivation to stick with this program and you are it. You are the oldest (no offense because I'm 44) that I've seen so far blogging about this program. You look really good and I would have never guess that you carried that much weight around the stomach. I started at 182 and got down to 150. I would like to be between 135 and 140 but I will be happy where ever I land. Your abs look really good and I get what you're saying about the butt too. Thank you so much for sharing. Also for saying that you disliked the cardio cause I thought it was just me and I'm also running and hula hooping sometimes, so that was good to know. You also look very youthful, so I was shock when I read that part about you being 40 but losing the weight really does help with that. Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, thanks. Glad to know I'm not the only one who dislikes cardio.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteFor the LONGEST time I thought you weren't real! Thank you for these recent pics. I am such a cynic when it comes to information on the Internet, but I am truly sold. I am also in my 40s. Thank thank you thank you for the inspiration and keep up the wonderful work.
Omigod, how could anyone make all of my craziness up? Ha ha. Good luck with the program.
DeleteYou look amazing! I'm so glad I found your blog. I just started Meta and I'm excited to hopefully have a transformation. I got the glutecentric video even though I could have done that one or abs since I have love handles that are horrible, but I'm hoping that doing this will help everything and not only my butt and thighs. I run 3x a week and am doing Meta about every other day rather than every just because that is what works for my schedule. I really hope that I can look as good as you do when I'm finished! Congrats to you for doing so well.
ReplyDeleteAngsamp, you'll get great results with Glutecentric, many of the girls who've done more than one centric saw awesome results with glute!! Good luck.
DeleteAngsamp, not hopefully have a transformation...words hold power, you will have a transformation. If I could post my pictures when I started, you would be shocked. I literally got most of it off from July to Sept with TAM. I was thinking about the sharing part that you wrote today, Shan, maybe we could do that for the maintenance. I mean post the beginning like you did with no head shots and see where we are and I think that would help everyone maintain. Especially seeing that quite a few noted that they were also nearing 40. That could be helpful, I think.
ReplyDeleteThanks Boom Boom, I'd be more than happy to feature you here. Shoot me an email oshan2nd@yahoo.ca
DeleteI just saw this. I'm still getting there...so I don't know how much of an inspiration I will be but I will send a few to you. I will have to get my daughter to take them off of my phone and send them to my email address.
ReplyDeleteHi Shan! I read your blog every day and u'r always an inspiration for me! I'm on Cont. 1.1.2 D3 .. I'm abcentric too and I'm doing TAM 5 a week.. I got good results on hips, arms, stomach...but my abs are still in a doughnut shape...Is there any chance for me to see an improvment even there? Sometimes I feel discouraged...
ReplyDeletenez
Nez. Hi. Yes, there is hope! For me, the first year of Continuity wasn't the best. I don't know if it was the workouts or my diet or just me, but finally I started added additional standing abs and doing more crunches and that made all the difference. And once I got into Continuity 2.0 the workouts got much better and I started enjoying them again.
DeleteStick with it, the method really works. Happy holidays!
Thank u dear, I will surely do it!! Happy holidays!!!
ReplyDeletenez
Good for you!
DeleteHi thanks for all the great inspiration, my hipcentric DVD'S should arrive in a week. I hope to have results half as good as yours. Have a great healthy new year.
ReplyDeleteHi Hi, and happy new year! Good for you for ordering the dvd's you won't be sorry. Good luck in your exciting new journey. we're with you all the way!
DeleteThank you for writing this blog! you've really inspired me to do TA method as I want to do it, which is without giving up oats for breakfast and with more good fats and healthy carbs in the diet. I just could not make it through the workouts on such a low calorie diet that she prescribes. Also its great too see that the mat workouts have such great results without having to do dance cardio 6 times a week. You look amazing girl!!
ReplyDeleteThank you. You should absolutely make it your own! Plenty of women on the forum have done the same and have had terrific results. The idea is to be balanced and healthy while looking your personal best. I wish you every success!!
DeleteI just purchased Meta after finding your blog. I do have Method, so I will use that until I get the Meta in the mail. I'm Omnicentric. I was stick thin as a young woman until after my 2 kids. Now I have just gained so much weight from stress and inactivity. I had lost 30 lbs by eating clean and doing Zumba. Then fell off the wagon and let myself gain all 30 lbs back. how sad is that! Anyway, I know what's possible, because I have done it before. I'm hoping TA can whip my body into shape in 90 days. I realize it is a lifelong commitment and once I'm done I will probably do the Continuity to keep my body. I'm intimidated by the 90 day commitment. Let's be honest, I'm intimidated by the 30 day Method! You are an inspiration. I hope that I can have great results like you have. And thank you for blogging. I'll be reading your blog daily as I go through my Meta process. It will be as if you are doing it with me.
ReplyDeleteAngela, it's super hard to know that you lost the weight and gained it back, it's like quitting smoking and then starting again. But, like you said you did it once and you can do it again. And this time you are most definitely not alone. I'm happy that I can be there doing it with you in spirit. You can laugh at all the whinging, moaning and crying I did over it - I still do - just try not to do it out loud as much.
DeleteGood luck and keep me posted!
Hi Shan, I too am doing TA continuity both Hips and Glute. I love both but I am not sure if
ReplyDeleteI should switch to Omni.
Hip helped to slim my thighs, but made my butt flat, and glute lifted my butt, however my thighs
seemed to get slightly larger. Both hip and glute come up on the body calculator.
Thigh slimming and butt lifting are my 2 major concerns. I do not put weight on anywhere else.
Currently I am finishing level 1.23 and I am confused which to order. Hip and Glute again or just
Omni. Weight and diet are not an issue. I am 5'4" and 107-110lbs.
I would put in a call or an email to Tracy's people, they might be better to help you choose, but Omni is great because it really does target your whole body.
DeleteThat said, I feel a difference in my butt and thighs on Abcentric, but abs really are my problem area.
I know, not very helpful. I'm sorry. But I will say, keep up the good work! Yay to you for sticking with it!
you need to do the insanity workout a few times a week to get a six pack you want.
ReplyDeleteHi, Wow! Your results are amazing, I am on day 22 of omni meta and my results are subtle, I also do the arm workout from the original mat workout as it's killer and I have stubborn bingo wings! Your testamonial is inspirational and I will stick with it. I don't stick to the dance cardio and its great to see that amazing results can be achieved without doing it regularly. Well done, if I ever lack motivation your website will be the first I visit.
ReplyDeleteThree weeks in is very impressive, you're sticking with it and that's commendable. I cannot wait to hear how you're doing at the end of the three months. I hope you love it as much as I have!
